Monroe County

Founded in 1831 and named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, this county is home to one of the most beautifully restored historic courthouses in the State of Missouri. The Monroe County Courthouse is in the middle of the town square in the City of Paris which is also the seat of county government. Bordered by Shelby, Marion, Ralls, Audrain and Randolph Counties, Monroe County is dissected by U. S. Highway 24 leading from the City of Moberly to is west to the historic river town of Hannibal to its east. Rich in a tradition of agriculture Monroe County is also home to Mark Twain Lake that covers over 18,000 acres that is formed by Clarence Cannon Dam a hydro-electric dam in neighboring Ralls County. Mark Twain Lake is also the water supply to many of the surrounding county’s rural water districts supplying potable water to thousands of homes. Housing multiple industrial and business parks between the City of Paris and the City of Monroe, Monroe County’s largest city, Monroe County has the workforce and the resources to support a growing business.
