Founded in 1831 and named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, this county is home to one of the most beautifully restored historic courthouses in the State of Missouri. The Monroe County Courthouse is in the middle of the town square in the City of Paris which is also the seat of county government. Bordered by Shelby, Marion, Ralls, Audrain and Randolph Counties, Monroe County is dissected by U. S.
