Named for the Chariton River that runs through the county, Chariton County has had a long standing reputation for the quality of agricultural products grown and produced in the area. The largest city in the county is Salisbury but the seat of county government is at home in the town of Keytesville. Founded in 1820, Chariton County has U.S. Highway 24 that traverses through the center of the county from east to west. Missouri highway 5 in the main artery traveling north to Linn County and south towards the Missouri River located between Howard and Cooper Counties. Macon, Linn, Howard, Randolph, Saline, Carroll and Livingston County
all boarder Chariton County which is home to Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge, one of two such areas in the MAEDC region. Brunswick, Bynumville, Dalton, Forest Green, Mendon, Prairie Hill, Marceline, Rothville, Snyder, Sumner and Triplett make up the rest of the communities in Chariton County.
