Moberly Named A Top Micropolitan Community

May 26, 2015

Moberly, MO – Once again Moberly has received national attention for new business investment.  Moberly was recently named as one of the Top 100 Micropolitan Communities in the country for 2014.

The United States Census Bureau defines a Micropolitan as a community with a population of at least 10,000 residents but less than 50,000 in total population.  Each year Site Selection magazine, an industry leading publication ranks Micropolitan communities based upon the growth in their business community.

To be considered as one of the top 100 communities in the nation a community must have a business project that involves a minimum $1 million of new capital investment, create 20 or more new full-time jobs or have an expansion of at least 20,000 square feet of new construction.  In 2014, Moberly had two business projects that met or exceeded those requirements.

The recent expansion at Mid-Am Building Supply along with the announcement in April 2014 that GAF will construct a new manufacturing facility landed Moberly on the list in a tie for 74th place.

“This is acknowledgement of a lot of hard work by business leaders in the Moberly community” said Corey Mehaffy, President of Moberly Area Economic Development Corporation.  “This is not the first time the community has been recognized in this way. Decision makers from all over the county are learning that the MAEDC Region is a great place for their business investments.”

In 2014 Moberly was home to several new investments from small businesses in the Downtown District as well. Mehaffy added, “It takes business investment at all levels to expand and diversify our economy and these investments are cyclical.”

“We are expecting continued growth in 2015,” said Mehaffy.  “We are working everyday with those that want to start a new business or expand an existing business in our three-county region.”

Howard, Monroe and Randolph Counties comprise the three-county region that Moberly Area Economic Development services.  “We are experiencing growth in our partner counties as well; this combined investment is providing benefit to the entire region,” Mehaffy said.

Only two other communities in the State of Missouri earned the honor of being named as a 2014 Top 100 Micropolitan Community.  Sedalia landed on the list in a tie for the 42nd position with 3 projects and West Plains was also a part of the tie for 74th place with Moberly with 2 projects that met the criteria.
